Abstract to  Contribution

Manfred Kupffer, in “Counterpart Semantics and the Multiple De Re”, analyses the problem of de re multiplicity. David Lewis treats such statements in terms of pairs of counterparts, whereas Allen Hazen proposes to deal with such statements in terms of counterparts of pairs. Kupffer, in turn, implements the latter proposal in a very simple semantics based on recent advances by V.B. Shethman and M.A. Skvortsov.  The resulting semantics incorporates Lewis’s treatment of the simple de re, but  improves in various respects on Lewis's original counterpart-theoretic semantics. He allows it to deal correctly with essential relations, provides it with a classical modal logic, and integrates the resulting formalism with the unrestricted quantifiers of Lewis’s own language. Kupffer maintains that, contrary to Lewis, we are able with this tool to give a systematic semantics for logically contingent existence statements.
